Introduction

Grant Lewi (1902 - 1951) is a legendary figure among twentieth century astrologers. He was a writer and editor for the two largest astrological magazines of the time. His two books, Heaven Knows What and Astrology for the Millions, were the first astrological books to become best sellers and even today, over fifty years later, they remain among the best introductions to the subject of astrology.

The astrological interpretations found in Heaven Knows What and Astrology for the Millions were unique, fresh, and simple. Llewellyn George, the prominent astrologer of the time, remarked that Lewi's interpretations must be intuitive because they were unlike any that had been written before him. Today these interpretations remain energetic and forceful and, though some references are now dated, Lewi's text still provides some of the clearest insights found anywhere in the literature of astrology.

Lewi was determined to make astrology more accessible to the average person, but while popularizing the subject he never watered it down or reduced it to the level found in "sun sign" astrology. Writing before computers were available, he made his books function as the computer, providing the reader with tables to generate their own charts or horoscopes and then linking his interpretations to the information found there. Lewi would have made good use of the computer, so much in his books seem to anticipate them. In his writing he tried to emulate the interpretation process by using a computerless version of artificial intelligence: the meaning of a planet in a sign doesn't stand alone but is modified by the other aspects found in your chart. Many of his comments depend on a combination of factors and for this reason you will sometimes find that he has something different to say about an aspect in your chart than he does for the same aspect in your friend's chart.

This report calculates your chart for you and then collects all of Lewi's comments strictly according to the astrological factors found there. The text contained here is valid even for those who don't know their time of birth - Lewi focused on those factors that are in effect throughout the birthday. The only exception to this is the case of the Moon which can move between 12 and 14 degrees in a day, so if the positions were calculated for noon then the Moon could be as much as 6 or 7 degrees different and possibly even change signs. If you don't know your time and the texts that involve the Moon seem unlikely, you may wish to compare reports done for the beginning and the end of the day.

At all times, Lewi’s aim has been to show how astrology can be used as an aid in living a more satisfying and fulfilling life. Astrology offers indications and pointers - and sometimes insights - to situations that you find in life. It doesn’t tell you what to do about them, but if it offers you a better understanding of the situation, then you are in a better position to decide for yourself what to do. To quote Grant Lewi:

"It is not limitations that eats out the heart, but inaction, the knowledge of powers not used, the sense of having failed to develop to the utmost. The overcoming of fate is not the overcoming of limitations: that is impossible. It is the exercise of free will, the assertion of the full self, expanding to its utmost with the tools at hand, in the circumstances that are set. Astrology, through the interpretation of the horoscope, assists men to the achievement of their maximum by indicating to them the lines along which their will may be most progressively applied, the goals to be sought, and the individual means by which each one may arrive at the outermost boundaries of his world."

Your horoscope of birth is the blueprint of your personality and character as indicated by the position of the Sun, the Moon and the eight planets on the date of your birth. This section is devoted to each of these members of the solar system.

The planets are the antennae and arms of the horoscope, of which the body and soul are the Sun and Moon. No planet will ever cause you to act counter to the testimony of the Sun and Moon in their combined influence on you. Remember this when you proceed with the following readings. All planetary vibration must be considered in light of the basic solar-lunar readings, for these are your character, your basic nature, which the planets will help or hinder but cannot materially change.

According to the sign position of your Sun, one planet will be more important than the others and should probably be read first. Your Sun is in Scorpio and your dominant planet is Mars. Not only the action of this ruling planet will be very important in your life, but also the attribute over which it rules. Thus Gemini, ruled by Mercury, lives a great deal in the senses; Libra, ruled by Venus, responds most readily to emotional stimuli; and so on. Study your ruler carefully.

Remember in all planetary readings that they work within the pattern of your solar-lunar nature; never against it. The synthesis of your horoscope from the following series of paragraphs to a working unit depends on your keeping this in mind, which will enable you to weld all the readings into a unified and significant whole.

You are an intellectual, whether in science or in the arts or merely on the appreciative side. You have creative literary gifts. Your scientific bent is strong. In any case you belong to that critical and appreciative public without which art and science are useless and pointless. You are sensitive, intuitive, with infinite discrimination, with respect to both works of art and people. You have an instinct for the right thing. This may make you hypercritical. You see through people, maybe better than they want you to, and there's likely to be an accusing look in your eye even when you aren't saying a word. You can make your disapproval felt, for you are a good actor by instinct and know the value of shrugs, gestures, facial expressions - and silence or the dead pan. You are romantic and imaginative, and if human companionship doesn't suit you, you are capable of retiring within yourself, from which sanctum many horses will not be sufficient to draw you. You are also capable of fits of gloom, despair, and despondency. With your Moon square Saturn and Sun conjunct Mercury, these moods may be a real menace to your peace of mind. You can imagine and fear the worst things in the world and go through all the agonies that you would if they were real, sitting fight before your own fireplace. You can have the house on fire, the children burned to ashes, and the firemen on the scene just by letting yourself go. This imagination, constructively used in creative processes, is what can make you successful in fiction and literary creation; but allowed to go into romance, daydreaming, or dramatic apprehensions of improbable woe, it simply makes you unhappy and nervous.

Nerves become a real problem, and you need to find a constructive outlet for your mental and emotional energies which otherwise run away with you. Romance is hectic and varied and complicates your life.

The Sun indicates the appearance you will present before the world and the psychological bias which will dominate your actions. What you seem, and why, are told in the reading for your Sun. In many ways the Sun is the dominant force in your horoscope and in your life. Other influences, especially that of the Moon, may modify the Sun's influence, but nothing will cause you to depart very far from the basic solar pattern. For this reason a whole literature and a whole business have grown up around Sun-sign astrology; and many people exist who think there is nothing more to the horoscope than knowing what "sign you were born in" and what the Sun in that sign means. This is a mistake, as you will discover when you have read the influence of the other bodies. But throughout your reading, keep in mind always the basic influence of the Sun, and remember that all other influences must be interpreted in terms of it, especially in so far as other influences play a visible role in your life. You may think, dream, imagine, hope to be a thousand things, according to your Moon and your other planets, but the Sun is what you are, and to be your best self in terms of your Sun is to cause your energies to work along the path in which they will have maximum help from planetary vibrations.

The dualism of Scorpio makes it a baffling sign, for the Scorpion combines materialism with spirituality. He is "the world, the flesh and the devil" and also the spirit that renounces them. He is full of the zest of life, which, however, is meaningful only after he has added a unique, almost mystic, significance. The search for inner values, for the key to the riddle of self, of world, of life itself, is Scorpio's basic motivation, and his search, whether it takes him to spiritual heights or into the darkest of subconscious depths, is always intense. To him, "Life is real, life is earnest, and the grave is not its goal." Scorpio takes himself, his work, his ideals, his love seriously and insists that others do the same; yet at the same time he is aware of the fleetingness of it, the futility of it, the smallness of it. Not usually religious in any orthodox sense, he has his own personal religion, which is more mystic than philosophic, and which is part of the depths of his profound nature.

Scorpio is the only sign that never produces a shallow person. The best of the rest dip into nonentities from time to time, but a Scorpion is always consequential. You must reckon with him even if you dislike or despise him. He can sink to the lowest level of them all if the sense of futility turns his great energies inward instead of outward; but to whatever level he may sink, he carries with him an essential dignity, as if to represent the greatness of Lucifer in fall as well as in glory. At its best, Scorpio is a mechanical, spiritual or legal genius, though rarely an executive. Luxurious and extravagant in his tastes, he lacks interest in making money because, when he calls on his maximum powers, they lead him to noncommercial fields. So great is his magnetism that he will generally be found in a position where he can get all he wants without giving his all, which is reserved for private, perhaps secret, pursuits.

Scorpio is careful of appearances, generally a conformist in all that meets the eye, and would not willingly let you into the private details of his life, thoughts and philosophies. Yet these are very clear to him and provide him with an unexpressed viewpoint that gives him great poise. He looks at the world with aware, perhaps accusing, eyes; he does not betray the secret he has with himself, which gives him reserve and self-assurance and an uncanny knack of making the other fellow feel that he knows more than he is expressing. Part of the secret of Scorpio (no one can tell you all of the secret except the individual Scorpion himself, and he won't) is the simplicity with which he accepts the merger of the material and the spiritual. He relates all problems of life to a standard of intangibles that is unknown to other men, achieves a practical answer in terms of his secret, perhaps unconscious, doctrine of the worlds, and thus adds to his personality the sort of magic one would have who consulted with an invisible, but ever-present, guardian angel.

Following are the aspects to your Sun. In a general way, the trines and sextiles to your Sun make ease, contentment, happiness, luck; while squares and oppositions give you energy, drive, success, ambition. Conjunctions bring both energy and luck, and are translatable in terms of whether the Sun receives squares or trines, along with the conjunction. Similarly, squares and trines to the Sun together bring success through work and perseverance, and luck develops in proportion to the work done and the effort extended.

You have a sound mentality. along whatever lines you work you are fundamentally sane. Even with the erratic aspect, Moon square Mars, which makes for nervousness, you have a hitching post of normalcy. Men and women with this aspect have an assurance against serious or permanent mental difficulties which will carry them through a whole lot of stress and bring them out the right side. Stubbornness is marked, and you are a tough customer to make change your mind once you have it made up. You are studious and sound in your intellectual work, but this position does not in itself make for creative ability. This will make for perseverance - the ability to add the ninety-nine percent of perspiration to genius's one percent of inspiration.

Power is important to you but, without introspection, this power is likely to be a "bluff," a show you put on to impress others. With introspection, you can use your clear perspective on your motivations to give a solid sense of purpose and determination to everything you do. Hidden resentments can trip up even your most well-intentioned actions, so self-knowledge is essential for success. Winning is important to you, so you could become a master of tricks and manipulation. The lesson is the proper application of power, so that success comes through the use of your magnetism and inner strength rather than through the use of dirty tricks. Try to be for things as intensely as you are against them.

While the Sun's position by sign determines what motives and urges dominate your life as it meets the naked eye, the sign position of the Moon tells the desire of your heart which may or may not be expressed or realized in your life. When you "know what you mean but you can't say it," it is your Moon that knows it and your Sun that can't say it. "Thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears" are the thoughts of your Moon's nature. The wordless ecstasy, the mute sorrow, the secret dream, the esoteric picture of yourself that you can't get across to the world, or which the world doesn't comprehend or value - these are the products of the Moon in your horoscope. When you are misunderstood, it is your Moon nature, expressed imperfectly through the Sun sign, that you feel is betrayed. When you know what you ought to do, but can't find the right way to do it, it is your Moon that knows and your Sun that refuses to react in harmony. Also, when you "don't know why I said that," it was your Moon expressing despite your Sun (if you are innerly satisfied with the involuntary speech), or the Sun expressing against the will of the Moon (if you are displeased with what has slipped out). Things you know without thought - intuitions, hunches, instincts - are the products of the Moon. Modes of expression that you feel are truly your deepest self belong to the Moon: art, letters, creative work of any kind; sometimes love; sometimes business. Whatever you feel is most deeply yourself, whether or not you are able to do anything about it in the outer world, is the product of your Moon and of the sign your Moon occupies at birth.

To achieve wisdom, to dwell in the high secluded valley of Shangri-la, to know yourself and your relation to the universe, to be in tune with the infinite, and to be recognized as a person of understanding: these are the constant aims of your life, in the fulfillment of which you satisfy most truly your esoteric picture of yourself. If you want material things, it is so that your study and contemplation may be comfortable, untroubled by worry over security; and if material things are hard to get, you are capable of achieving a philosophy that makes them unnecessary to your contentment and self-development, which is always the kernel of your nut of life. On the other hand, if material things come easily, if circumstances and your total personality conspire to start you on an upward spiral toward success, your inner nature will tell you that success and luxury are, for some deep spiritual reason, your due; and the comfort they bring your spirit may lend you power in getting more and more of them. In no case, however, are material concerns of first import to your deepest and truest self, whose search is always for self-knowledge, self-understanding and self-fulfillment in the intangible sense that depends on nothing outside of you. You are unhappy only when you violate, in action, thought, word, some truth that is essential to you, or when you realize you have acted counter to the dictates of your own self-taught wisdom. Too continuous violation of your own code causes brooding and deep unhappiness, and thus your only sure path to contentment, which is your success, is to make sure that you adhere always to the wisdom already acquired, and build stone by stone toward that high pyramid of wisdom in the completion of which is your success.

Following are the aspects to your Moon. Look to the trines and sextiles to give you charm and clear-thinking; and to the squares and oppositions to provide you with concentration and driving force.

This adds an element of luck to the life and will tend to strengthen any good, or minimize any evil, that may be indicated by the rest of the chart. It inclines to a strong, sound body and an ability to take the ups and downs of the world in your stride. While it will not negate in any large degree the difficulties of the powerful aspects, it will cushion the blow, give you internal resilience and external poise, as well as an elastic power to bounce back to normal from any personal or economic difficulty.

This aspect doesn't make you very sociable and is likely to impair popularity by making you scornful of the things that have to be done to achieve it. Your attitude is that you just won't be bothered - if they want you, let them come for you. You have to learn to go out of your way more for people. The truth of the matter is that you are sensitive, have a sort of inferiority complex about your popularity, and dread the idea of pushing yourself forward, with the result that periodically, through sheer discouragement, you push yourself in the wrong way and at the wrong time. Look around you at the people who are well liked and try to take a leaf from their book. You are very much impressed by sex matters, which are dangerous and need controlling. This is a difficult aspect for material matters, for you spend money foolishly, and have to cultivate good business sense. You are a real spendthrift at heart; getting rid of money amounts to a genius with you. You are emotionally temperamental and can weep buckets when you are hurt, or when you realize you've hurt someone else; for you are gentle, and wouldn't willfully hurt anyone. But for all that, you do.

You started out in life like a house afire - all energy and intelligence and even brilliance, for this is the aspect of the child who is thought to be a genius in his early and formative years. Your mind was quick, apt, facile, expressive, and able to absorb and give back knowledge readily, so that you were the delight of your parents and teachers, giving promise of great achievement in later life. In many ways you were extraordinarily precocious throughout youth; and at any time in life you possess an exceptional mentality and great possibilities. Your mind is analytic and scientific rather than artistic and creative; and although the creative urge is powerful, the creative force is not usually present with this configuration. Anything that requires knowledge, factual application, technical ease, or critical insight, is your forte, and in these fields you can go far. As a scientist, mathematician, critic, or technician, your mind is invaluable, and the independence and originality of your thought processes enable you to forge to the front. There is with this aspect some danger that after the first glow and flush of youth is past, the great urge to better and improve yourself will in some subtle and inexplicable way be dissipated and lost. A sort of mental inertia may settle over you in which accomplishment becomes difficult. It requires a tremendous amount of will power to bring the promise of this aspect to fruition. There is a tendency to relax internally, with an intimate knowledge of your own worth as your pillow, and forget that no worth is worth anything if it is not made apparent in the world as it is. This is a position also of great nervous tension, of the sort which is classically supposed to accompany genius. You may be tempted to seek escape from this tension in a variety of artificial anodynes - either in simple daydreaming and imagining what you might be or what you have been or what you are going to be; or in the more concrete escapes, which are also the more dangerous escapes. Liquor or alcohol in any form is poison to you, either to your digestive tract, or to your psychic, mental, and nervous state. Similarly, you should avoid the use of any drug or soporific stronger, let us say, than aspirin, and seek to find the solution to your tensions in more constructive mediums. You should practice relaxation deliberately. Get plenty of sleep, and in every way try to cut down the stress of your existence, both internal and external. You have tremendous possibilities - perhaps even genius - and you owe it to yourself and the world to make the most of them.

This is perhaps the most powerful single aspect you can have in a horoscope. It gives both ambition and the ability to concentrate on it. You are serious-minded, at times changing to moody, depressed, and dejected; but as you grow older an early tendency to fall into the doldrums gradually disappears as your mind becomes organized into a smooth-running unit driving always toward a well-defined goal. Whatever your physical energy may or may not be, your mental and psychic energy is high and well directed. You do not waste yourself in profitless ventures or very much in nerves, anger, or displays of temperament; these belonged to your early years, and you learned as you grew older the futility and waste which such displays involve. Your greatest asset is your ability to learn by experience, for though you have made many, and probably great, mistakes, your self-knowledge is your salvation. At the bottom of the pit of depression or despair or error, you are able to look yourself squarely in the face and start building your way back to where you want to be. You have an inner drive and a sense of your own worth amounting almost to a neurosis, which you are able to express on the constructive side. Psychologically this marks you as somehow extraordinarily influenced by one or both parents. Thus, in whatever field you choose to operate - business, the professions, or the arts - you have the jump on competitors who are not assisted by the mental energy and the psychological drive of this aspect. Although determined and apparently ardent in emotional matters, you are capable of being pretty cold when it suits your purposes. Nothing personal is allowed to interfere with the main stream of your intentions once youth is past and your purposes are set. Prior to this, in youth, this aspect gives a hectic emotional life, and you may be the despair of yourself and your friends and relatives. Through excessive independence you hurt your parents; through erratic action, your sweethearts. But as you mature, these temperamental qualities fall away. What has happened goes deeply into your consciousness; and your fund of experience, falling under the scrutiny of an analytical mentality, contributes to that knowledge of the world, of people, and of yourself which becomes the cornerstone of your success. The power of this aspect is so great that with any encouragement from any other aspect, it will produce success along some line or other. Its genius varies according to other indications.

This is a more powerful position in a male than in a female horoscope, though in either case its significance is marked. The psychological bias is toward the mother and thus operates more constructively in men than in women. In men this aspect tends to some unhappiness in marriage, less the fault of the wife (who usually proves an admirable balance wheel) than of the psychological complexity of the man. Maturity brings more happiness, as this aspect steadies down. In women, in addition to producing the admirable mental qualities indicated, it may also tend to poor health, self-pity, and, in extreme cases hypochondria.

This impairs the creative gifts, and your manner of thought and expression, intruding an unrealistic note into your notions and confusing practical issue with hazy and misty generalizations. In business, thought, romance, you have to keep your feet on the ground, for you love the clouds. You are capable of daydreaming by the hour and of concocting brave plans that would be marvelous - if you or anyone else could make them happen. This adds a sort of naive charm to your nature. You can believe in fairies, Santa Claus and ghosts, just as others can believe in Herbert Hoover, and your perpetual love for the mystic will intrigue those who love the innocent, the childish, the unspoiled. But all this doesn't help you much in the world of affairs, and an impractical approach to many things will stand in the way of your progress until such a time as you get your feet on the ground and hitch your wagon to a fence post.

Mercury is the sense-impression antennae of your horoscope. His position by sign indicates your reactions to sights, sounds, odors, tastes and touch impressions, affording a key to the attitude you have toward the physical world around you. Mercury is the messenger through which your physical body and brain (the Sun) and your inner nature (the Moon) are kept in contact with the outer world, which will appear to you according to the index of Mercury's position by sign in the horoscope.

You see, hear, experience with the legalistic attitude of a judge. Anything that stands before the bar of your senses isn't likely to get off easily, for you interpret critically what passes before your eyes, and not always kindly. As a result, when you give expression to your judgment, you may earn the reputation for having a sharp tongue. Your powers of observation are acute; you have the eye of an eagle, and a kind of permanent awareness of what is going on around you makes it impossible for anyone to put anything over on you. You have eyes in the back of your head, and a sixth sense tells you things that the other five miss. Criticism is part of your process of taking in the world, and you never take in much of it without passing judgment in the process. You observe accurately but not always charitably; the nerve channels through which impressions reach the brain are apparently filled with acid which eats away the superficialities that impress others and leaves only the stark realities to be recorded on your cerebellum. You are therefore a first-class critic and debunker, seeing through phoniness, sham and pretension and, since your eyes and ears rarely deceive you, pretty generally getting to the truth of what goes on.

You tend to be dogmatic, stubbornly resisting change and other people's ideas. In your early years, you may have rebelled against the discipline of learning; now, you may consider yourself slow or stupid, when your only problems are a lack of openness to new ideas and a lack of concentration. Once you apply your mind to the subjects that are important to you, you can become a self-made person. You should think before you speak, since you can put people off with an unintentional brusqueness. Intentional sharpness or sarcasm when angry can lose you the support you've worked hard to gain. Be as sensitive to other people's feelings as you are to your own. One of the major lessons you must learn is how to accept constructive criticism.

Venus is the emotional antenna of your horoscope. Through Venus, impressions come to you from the outer world because of which you feel and react emotionally. The position of Venus by sign at the time of your birth gives the key to your attitude toward these emotional experiences. As Mercury is the messenger linking sense impressions (sight, smell, etc.) to the basic nature of your Sun and Moon, so Venus is the messenger linking emotional impressions.

You relate emotional experience to a well organized code of conduct. You have strong family feeling and generally have genuine affection for your relatives Your belief in the proprieties is so strong that you just don't have emotions that would involve their violation. Your impulses are usually strictly proper; if you stray from the beaten track, it is because you have convinced yourself that it is all right: you satisfy your conscience before the transgression, and rarely after. You substitute self-justification for remorse. Small niceties are emotionally important to you, and if you're not careful, you will substitute the sentimentalities of love for love itself. The proprieties as you conceive them stand guard over your emotional reactions; your sense of good taste is your emotional censor, and will keep you from many unconventionalities of those less sure of the right thing. This need not detract from the warmth of your nature, provided you don't let the tail wag the dog. Remember that the proprieties were made to serve a purpose, and that before there can be an emotional code there must be emotions. To have proprieties for their own sake is like having a general and no army.

This strengthens your emotions and passions and will bring you some turbulent experience through love and sex at some time during your life. It adds a note of inharmony and strangeness to the love-life, making you extremely self-willed and independent. There is danger of psychopathic independence in sex matters, due to some distressing experience. You have a highly unconventional and stormy sex-life. You are temperamental, and if the intellectual qualities are not markedly strong, you may be led to serious involvements through the misdirection of the passional and sensational nature. If the mental qualities are strong, this increases romanticism and intrudes a sensual note into the nature. It also inclines to financial extravagance in the matters of pleasure, dress, personal and domestic finery. There is a good deal of spice to your personality. You are magnetic, love company and a good time, and there is very little prudery about you. You'll swap yarns with the best of 'em, and maybe not always Sunday-school stories either.

With respect to financial and economic conditions this does not indicate inheritance, in fact takes it away. Even if you were born into a family of wealth, it is likely to disappear before it gets to you or to be less than you had thought it would be. You receive little help from your parents and should not live around them any longer than you can help. You do best when you are on your own. Work for and live among strangers. You are careful of money but never seem to have enough. You should make a budget and stick to it. You have good business sense of a temperamental sort. You don't plan things out too well, but your instincts are pretty good because conservative. On the other hand, you are capable of scrimping for a long time and then spending your savings foolishly. You're the fellow Benjamin Franklin was aiming at when he wrote, "Never buy what you do not need because it is cheap." You have a fear and dread of poverty which may not be at all justified, but which you should guard against by always keeping something laid up for a rainy day. Property rights are sacred to you, and you love to own things, especially land and your own house. You will make no end of sacrifices to have a place of your own.

You are magnetic and charming, attractive to the opposite sex, and mildly unconventional in regard to sex matters. You have a broad emotional viewpoint tending to the generally humane rather than to the strictly personal. Eccentric friends are helpful; you gather strange birds around you. You love to help the underdog. An active social nature brings you in contact with strong people and assists your advancement. This adds to the luck in life and suggests a marriage that is happy romantically and financially helpful at the same time. It is a mild aspect in itself and produces little but strengthens the good and mitigates the evil, as shown by the rest of the chart.

You are artistic, ultra-romantic, and impressionable. You fascinate others with a kind of other-worldly charm. There is something ethereal about you that isn't completely explained by your appearance, which doubtless is handsome or beautiful, depending on your sex. To men this gives a grace and charm of appearance and manner that is especially acceptable to women. To women it gives a sort of fragile and transparent beauty that is magnetically captivating. You have to look out that your own charms don't run away with you, for there's a touch of sensationalism here, and an "all-for-love-and-the-world-well-lost" attitude that makes your emotions dangerous. You play hunches with respect to people, staking everything on your first impressions which can be woefully wrong. You are attracted by the unusual rather than by the sound in human beings, and can get mixed up with odd creatures if you let yourself go. You react rapidly to sense impressions and also to alcohol and drugs, which awaken the least desirable side of your emotional nature, for under your idealism there's a thick strata of earth.
