Neptune: The Dream Weaver
Have you ever noticed how a picture of yourself from 10 years ago seems "dated"(Look at that hairstyle! What were we thinking?) Or how a cutting edge movie from the early 90's now seems drab or cliché? What happens? At the time, those celluloid images were breath taking, I mean American Gigolo owned the coolest clothes on the planet but now they seem old, out of style. And the cycle never stops; each year "Cool" is defined by something else (even the word Cool is now cliché and some young sources tell me that the current moniker used for defining something impressive is "Tight" or "Phat" surpassing the recent rivals "Rad" and "Awesome"). Well we can blame Neptune.
Ah, the planet Neptune, whose mysterious existence blankets us with dreams, subtly shapes our reality and affects our destiny in ways that can only be recognized when we are free from its influence.
In a way, we are hypnotized by Neptune, ruler of hypnosis, fashion, movies, dreams and everything subconscious that colors our reality. We are taken into his watery den seduced by the Neptune drug and drugged by the Neptune seduction.
Bin Laden is full of Neptune. A Sun sign in Pisces (the ruler of Neptune), which lies in his Twelfth House (also ruled by Neptune). He is a drug for thousands and a "bad trip" for millions but his influence can't be ignored. But soon, he too will just be a vague memory.
Neptune rules artistry and con-artistry, deception, guilt, martyrdom and creativity, it's all in how it affects your chart. Attempting to understand Neptune is very similar to the art of interpreting a dream. Each part of the dream is connected to something deep within us, yet it seems so separate from us. Does the dream foretell of something to come or is it simply showing parts of us that we fear or need to embrace? Analyzing Neptune takes work and some amount of blending the analytical part of your mind with the surreal or emotional counterpart.
Neptune is best understood in hindsight; by looking at our history we can better understand this mysterious planet's influence on our psyches.
Neptune in Cancer: roughly 1902-1916. The generation born with Neptune in Cancer has strong psychic ties to their country or wherever it is that they consider "home". These individuals have a deeply running emotion that sees the child in everyone thus creating a tendency for deep compassion especially for the underprivileged or disadvantaged often to the point of fanaticism. Historically, issues of Water, Women, Mother and Children surfaced. Considered the first decade of Consumerism (1902) Teddy bears became popular from Theodore Roosevelt's "letters to his Children". Child Labor laws were aggressively created and the first Juvenile Court was established. Carrie Nation wielded her axe against alcoholic consumption (another example of how Women extended their boundaries from mother and homemaker). The Food and Drug Act was founded (showing the Cancerian role as "mother to our country"). The Wizard of Oz hits our consciousness about a Girl wanting to return Home (reflecting the importance of the Home to Cancer). She destroys one wicked witch with her home and the other with Water (the Cancer element), the National Park Service (reflecting the importance of honoring "Mother Earth") and the Girl Scouts were established. The Titanic Sinks (Water Crisis)
Neptune in Leo: The Generation born with Neptune in Leo was born with intense creative urges and romantic ideals sometimes to the point of self-delusion. Empires were established and hedonism (a very Leo Concept) is born. Neptune was in Leo roughly from 1916 to 1928 during which we saw Women's right to vote (the 19th amendment), the Roaring (see the Leo in there?) 20's. Women no longer wanted to be the broad hipped Mothers of the race (the Neptune in Cancer Generation) instead they taped down their breasts and started to become thin and androgynous with short bobbed hair, setting the new Neptune fashion trend of the flapper. Art explodes in Paris, the Chrysler and Empire State buildings were erected and Art Deco hit's our consciousness. The Jazz Age is in Full bloom and flagpole sitting was only one of the many "weird" pastimes used to define our specialness. Prohibition begins and bigger than life gangsters emerge. A bomb explodes near Wall Street killing 30, suspect never found. Royal Leo titles seemed to flood the senses. "The King and Queen of Golf" (Bobby Jones and Glenna Collett), the "Sultan of Swat" was given to Babe Ruth. Big Studio Giants emerged in Hollywood the most classic being MGM whose logo was a big Lion. Grand Canyon becomes a national park. Gandhi rallies his proud nation for passive resistance. Soviet Union Legalizes abortion (first nation to do so.). Trojan condoms debut and the most literal representation of Leo in American was the crowning of the first Miss America.
Neptune in Virgo:roughly 1928-1942: The Neptune in Virgo generation lived in a time of great change and a thwarting of material opulence in direct contrast to the Grand Leo Era. The material focus is the result of Virgo being an Earth Sign. There were great advances made by looking below the surface of life into the minute details like only a Virgo can. They were born in the era of the Great Depression where economic strife and scarcity of employment was the main diet. The detailed eye of Virgo invites science to look at the smallest details of life and as a result the first atom is split and the positron (positively charged electron) is discovered. The nuclear age is born. Third Reich promulgates its first anti-Jewish ordinance (a negative reflection of the discriminating mind of Virgo). The Empire State Building is completed and streamlining became the Architectural shape of choice (showing Virgo's simplistic styling and tendency toward minimalism). Prohibition is repealed ("cleaning up" the Criminal element in our culture at the time), and the Social Security act is passed (a Virgo urge to care for those in need). The Grapes of Wrath is published giving a glimpse at the life of the "common man". The first minimum wage law is passed. Superman is born but instead of just being a Leo type God he has a Virgo disguise as humble, common Clark Kent. Virgo Batman had his Leo counter- part Bruce Wayne. Margaret Mitchell writes Gone with the Wind depicting life in the South in breath-taking detail (detail being a favorite Virgo pastime) and Neptune creates it as one of the most important movies of the 20th century. We were longing to clean the streets of a broken America facilitated by FDR, the president of the People, giving us "Fire Side Chats" by Radio (a result of Mercury, the planet of communication, ruling Virgo.)
Neptune in Libra: roughly 1942-1956: The Neptune in Libra generation started having the dream (Neptune) for balance, peace and relationships (Libra). This is the first time we started new ideas of fairness sometimes by going to the extremes of unfairness. These natives love the concept of harmony though being forced at times to create chaos to get there. Libra, being an Air Sign brought many events of flight. World War II was the "Air War" as Japan launched the largest aerial campaign against the U.S. at Pearl Harbor. Winston Churchill proclaims an "iron curtain" has come down across Europe ringing the Libran bell of harmony. American troops returned home and started making babies resulting in the baby boom. McCarthyism is born with a campaign to root out communism in America (a twisted form of Libra pushing to keep everything pretty) and McCarthy hearings are on TV for five weeks. By the end, Senator McCarthy is publicly disgraced (the scales return to balance). The First successful kidney transplant was performed (Libra rules the Kidneys). Divorce rate soars as relationship values are reexamined. Television turns to intellectual (Air) entertainment as "The $64,000 Question is introduced and Hats seem to be the fashion hit (Libra is Air ruling the Head). NATO is formed (uniting Military Powers in Libran Peace). Women began wearing pants and men began wearing Pink (a traditional feminine color). Hollywood Goddesses were born: Hedy LaMarr, Rita Hayworth, Veronica Lake, Lana Turner and many more (this is a reflection of the Venus Goddess energy of Libra).
Neptune in Scorpio: roughly 1957-70: Neptune in Scorpio dreams of discovering the secrets that lie beneath our awareness. This generation explored sexual variations never before talked about increasing the onslaught of Venereal diseases. Love Goddesses of the Neptune in Libra Generation turned into Sex Goddesses introducing Marilyn Monroe to the time period. Playboy Magazine was introduced and was an overnight success. The Civil rights movement began as black Rosa Parks gets arrested for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white man. Elvis Presley is discovered and dubbed "Elvis the Pelvis" in reference to his gyrating hips. This was the drug culture, using them not only for recreation but for increased awareness. First the Zen-inspired Beatnicks then the hippies have arrived with their alternative music and radical ideals. Sex, drugs and rock and roll. "To Kill a Mockingbird" becomes a symbol of the need to heal race relations as "Valley of the Dolls" exposes the drug culture of Hollywood. Joan Baez, Simon and Garfunkel, and Joni Mitchell are just a handful of the folk artists that exemplified the awareness sought by this generation. The first successful heart transplant (Scorpio rules surgery) is performed and great leaders like John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King emerge. Scorpio Conspiracy Theories break out due to the assassinations (Death is a Scorpio reference) of JFK and MLK. Spy movies like James Bond were such a success that in 1966 alone 23 movies and 10 television series were made.. The civil rights movement, Native American Movement, the Latino Movement and Sexual revolution are but a few of the sub-cultures to emerge from the Scorpion ashes to announce their liberation. The war in Vietnam led to rioting in American streets as students violently protested our involvement. Scary Scorpio murderers appeared, Richard Speck and Charles Mansion. Secrets got uncovered as Americans discovered that much of what they had been told about the Vietnam War was a lie.
Neptune in Sagittarius: (roughly 1970-1984) Neptune in Sagittarius individuals find deep satisfaction in the heart of their quest for the "truth". With Neptune in Sagittarius there is a growing recognition that we are not separate from the rest of the world (Sagittarius rules travel) but there were no more territories on Earth to discover so we turn to the Moon. During Neptune in Sagittarius Neil Armstrong becomes the first human to touch the moon. The first "man-made" objects to leave our solar system for the purpose of science were the probes named "Pioneer and Voyager" (2 very Sagittarian names). When Star Trek was introduced in the Neptune in Scorpio years, we weren't ready for it (trek is a perfect Sagittarius word) but when Neptune moves into Sagittarius it becomes a cult culture phenomenon. Movie blockbusters were all about space exploration, Alien, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. and Star Wars to name a few. Carl Sagan of Cosmos becomes a household name. Test tube babies become a reality (the higher use of drugs applied to science). And the strength of organized religions get questioned for the first time without fear of punishment. Cults were big and we found out how strong the power of seduction is. Remember Reverend Moon? Or Jim Jones? Drug rockers Jimi Hendricks and Janis Joplin both die of drug overdoses (Sag rules excess and Neptune rules drugs). We wanted more of everything. Deep Throat becomes the cult phenomenon simultaneous with our focus on God…"GodSpell", "Oh God!", "Jesus Christ Superstar" and of course "The Godfather" break records on Broadway and the cinema. The Beatles break up (Neptune rules dissolution). Nixon resigns as president (taking the Sagittarius excess to new heights). Disco reigns supreme with Sagittarius movies like "Saturday Night Fever". Even the bands of the times were named for the energy of Sagittarius; The Go-Gos, Rush, and the Cars. Song titles followed suit like "Life in the Fast Lane" and "Running on Empty".
Neptune in Capricorn: roughly 1984-1999 The Neptune is Capricorn generation have a harder time accepting the nebulous spirituality and seeming frivolity of the Sagittarius generation and will actively motivate towards a feeling of a more productive and realistic approach to life. Enter the Reagan Years. During this period we saw great changes in our ideals. Sandra Day O'Connor becomes the first woman justice of the Supreme Court, The National Organization for Women (NOW) rallies in Support of ERA which fails to become ratified, Communism all but ceased to exist in Eastern Europe, Ronald Reagan brings in an 8 year republican stint as President of the United States (Capricorn favors the Old and he was the oldest president ever elected), Aids is Discovered (end of promiscuous sex) and MTV makes it's debut making visual music more practical as people learned that being able to see their favorite artist makes a huge impact (practical Capricorn). We start turning our attention to the pragmatic issues of Capricorn. Family Values and dealing with "Father". Cabbage Patch Dolls are the rage coming with birth certificates and adoption papers. Movies about families take the spotlight; "Terms of Endearment" wins 5 Oscars. "On Golden Pond" deals with Jane Fonda's relationship with her Father both on the screen and in real life and Yentl highlights the struggles of a woman trying to make it a male dominated religion (with the main song "Papa Can you Hear me"). The bolstering video rage of the Sagittarian years comes to a startling halt and the light sit-coms of the Seventies could barely be seen in lieu of more serious television. Mount St. Helen erupts (Capricorn rules mountains) and the Titanic is discovered (it sank when Neptune was in Cancer the opposite sign of Capricorn). John Lennon is shot (signaling the death of anti-establishment ideals) and Michael Jackson is the new king of pop music (symbol of Big Business). "Just say No" anti drug campaign is introduced (a practical, Capricorn approach to drugs, Neptune). CD's outsell vinyl, (we remain Practical and compact). Jim Baker and Jim Swaggart both religious leaders who are involved in Sex Scandals (Capricorn looking for father figures) AOL is born uniting millions of people around the world (Capricorn unites masses).
Neptune in Aquarius: roughly 2000-2012 The Neptune in Aquarius generation is the generation of children who will hold humanity in a great ideal. The last time Neptune was in Aquarius was during the 1800's when the Manifest Destiny principle was adopted in America. Though, made controversial through political and selfish interests, in its purest form it represented the spirit of a group that believed expansion was part of their destiny, a destiny to "Share" their values of freedom with the world. Well, 160 years later we are singing "God Bless America" and realizing the dream of the Manifest Destiny. But it's not just America singing, every country is realizing their dream, appreciating what they have, even Bin Laden is aggrandizing his vision with ruthless determination to the point of being willing to die for it (or in his case willing to have others die for it.). We have a chance to find an ideal that we can believe in while Neptune rests in Aquarius. Aquarius so deeply focuses on the group that it often fails to remember the individual, but it can provide humanity with a common goal, a common dream. With Neptune again in an Air sign we find "Airborne bio-terrorism and Air Raids over Afghanistan. Movies are super-animated and Harry Potter's wizardry makes record sales. (Aquarius rules wizards) and Technology Stocks were never higher and advancements in medicines are commonplace yet still remarkable. Cellular phones (airwaves) are now the rule rather than the exception and the biggest blockbusters are "independent films" (independence being an Aquarian mantra). The humanitarian nature of Aquarius is seen as we simultaneously bomb a country and send food for the needy. For the first time we are recognizing that we are not separate from our neighbors in other countries but actually need them to co-exist. We let ourselves become aware of the plight of others less fortunate than us and stand in line to give our blood to strangers. With Neptune in Aquarius ideals become worth fighting for because true change does not come easy. Battles will have to be fought, battles that we have to believe in. In this cycle, we realize the need for change (Aquarius deeply desires to rattle the cage of conformity).
Well, there's life through the eyes of Neptune. You carry the urges of Neptune as a signature of the time period and you can use your Neptune Dreams to manifest a reality that serves the higher good. After all, that's the goal that the planets only symbolize, expressing our highest good, adding our light to the sum of light.
