Saturn: A look at Fear

We are all afraid. What happened on September 11th 2001 helped to give a focus to our fears but we have lived in fear from the moment we became human, it's a part of the package; part of an inner knowing that we are only visitors in this Earth Motel with an undisclosed check out time.

Each of us uniquely responds to this knowledge of our "temporary stay". Some of us become collectors of everything from money to experiences not unlike a tourist collecting reminders of their trip. Others may embrace a strong spiritual belief possibly hoping to gain reasons to play it out to the end and some of us never quite make it beyond a hopeless feeling of despair. The list goes on as varied as each of our faces; but one thing is certain, if you choose to stay on this Earth Motel, you will find a way to deal with the realties of it.

Many of us turn to Astrology as a way to help us navigate our journey here. Our astrological chart, that weird circle and its symbols is not an easy to understand map and it's certainly broad in its interpretation but it's a good system when used as a guide to self understanding and like all good maps, it can't tell you how to drive but it can point you in the right direction. Something like that, a map when I'm lost, gets a lot of points for reducing my fear factor.

Fear can be seen in the birth chart in a number of ways and all the signs have a specific thing they fear but Saturn is usually a specific marker in the chart for fears that must be overcome because hidden beneath them is a true gift of strength.

But Saturn is a tough teacher and most good teachers know that true knowledge can't be handed out frivolously; it requires work, diligence and patience. You can study Mountain Climbing forever but when you start to physically climb it, all those facts you read about start to transform. Saturn reminds us that doing is different than thinking. He also tells us what mountain we need to climb (personally I'd prefer to just study mountain) but sooner or later we realize that we can't ignore his long, pointing finger, insisting that we pack our gear and head for our mountain, our mountain of duty. Saturn knows that on the other side is our unexpressed talents and they haunts us and if we don't go after them they can fester and eventually become our wound, a part of us that never got expressed.
